Recession sinks, placements ring back in Delhi campuses

Global Recession seems to have bid adieu with the placement season knocking the doors of institutes and varsities in Delhi to hire the best talent.

Companies from various sectors have started their recruitment process with a serpentine line to hire the best out of the rest.

Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) recently announced the completion of its summer placement services for its students taking the figure to almost 100%.

"Companies like Microsoft and Coca-Cola are offering summer placements with a monthly stipend of as high as Rs.50,000. Around 80 other companies including all major banks, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and consultants actively participated in the exercise," said an FMS official.

The overwhelming response that FMS received from the first year students is preparing it to open the opportunity for those who will pass out of their respective institutes this academic session as well.

Madhu Vij, the placement in-charge at FMS is elated to compare the situation and says, "Things have changed drastically when compared to the last year, major companies who backed off due to recession, are now back this time. However, the response so far is encouraging but we are still keeping our fingers crossed. Companies interested in visiting our campus have noticeably increased with all the regulars checking in again."

The bell of placement is similarly ringing at Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI), which in its recent two-day career fair saw nearly 200 students being absorbed by 35 companies from diverse sectors.

A similar expression of relief was found with the training and placement officer at Jamia, Mr Rihan Khan Suri. According to him, "The scenario of placements is brighter this year as the companies who offered placements last year deferred the joining dates, have now asked the students to take their positions."

According to the dealings going on with a foreign job contractor, a significant number of jobs are on the cards for Jamia students as revealed by the varsity's administrator.

Delhi Technological University's (DTU) students too have a reason to cheer as they have received over 200 offers from nearly 35 companies.

According to the sources, DTU has recorded a domestic salary as high as Rs.12 lakh per annum as compared to the last year's Rs.15 lakh.

DTU's student's average salary is on an all time high touching Rs.7 lakh per annum rising from Rs.5.25 lakh per annum last year.

Prof. S.K Garg, who handles the matter related to training and placement at DTU said, "Once the IT companies start recruiting in January and February there will be a correction in the average salary. We expect a better average salary than last year's."

Most public sector units like IOCL, BHEL and NTPC have already extended their hand to DTU except a software company Aricent that has offered only 60 jobs so far.
