Civil services topper visits Jamia Millia to inspire students
Kashmiri youth icon Shah Faisal, who topped the civil services examination last year, gave a first hand account of his success to the students of Jamia Millia Islamia University, a university official said Wednesday. The interactive session - in the form of an open question-answer session - was organised Tuesday by the Centre for Coaching and Career Planning of the university.
'A large number of students came to interact and all of them had a lot of questions. He tried to inspire the young minds to pursue a career in the Indian Administrative Service,' said Simi Malhotra, media coordinator of the university. 'In his address, Faisal expressed his happiness at being in Jamia and said that his first priority will be to reduce the gap between the administration and the people it represents,' Malhotra added.
Meet the new DUSU prez
My role model is Narendra Modi and I want to be like him, but I don’t really know why,” says newly-elected Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) President, Jitender Choudhary, in an interview to HT City. Although a fan of Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif, Choudhary says, “My favourite movie is Shah Rukh’s Chak De India.” As for food, he likes to keep it simple. “Maa ke haath ka khaana works for me,” he says.
UGC breather for DU teachers
Around 300 ad hoc teachers of Delhi University (DU) have got a breather. The teachers were on the verge of losing their jobs, for not having met the minimum qualifications set by the University Grants Commission (UGC). In a letter addressed to the Deputy Registrar (Colleges) of DU, dated August 31,
The teacher who still wants to learn
As a child, Reeta Namdev wanted to be a doctor, a teacher, or join the military. These were professions that would give her a position of authority, allow her to command. As a visually impaired girl growing up in a small village in Uttar Pradesh’s Mahoba district, getting people to listen to her seemed an insurmountable challenge.

Today, 28-year-old Namdev is an assistant professor in Hindi at Bhagini Nivedita College, a girls’ institution under Delhi University. Five days a week and in 16 class sessions, around 50 students in a classroom listen in rapt attention to her lectures on Tulsidas’ poetry and the other classics. She rents a one-bedroom barsati (terrace apartment) in Delhi’s Najafgarh area, a half-hour commute from her college.
DUSU poll result reflects voters’ mood
The results of the elections to the Delhi University Students’ Union, in which the RSS-backed ABVP bagged three posts, while the Congress-controlled NSUI had to rest content with just one seat, are being seen in the political circles here as a reflection of the mood prevailing in the city.
The ABVP, which wrested control of the DUSU after a gap of 8 long years, made crucial changes in its candidate-selection process and voter-contact procedures, in keeping with the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee. The fact that the role of money power had diminished significantly too helped its case.
