100 glorious days of Delhi Technological University

New Delhi, Delhi, November 10, 2009 /India PRwire/ -- Delhi Technological University (DTU), formerly Delhi College of Engineering, recently completed 100 days of being accorded University status. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. P. B. Sharma, convened a meeting yesterday of faculty members and officers of the University, to provide a glimpse of the major achievements of the University in past 100 days as well as prepare agenda for the future.

The Vice Chancellor informed the gathering that four new undergraduate courses and six new postgraduate courses have been added from 2009-10 in areas of high relevance to the country. "Nano-Science and Technology, VLSI Design, Microwave and Optical Communication, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Power Systems are the areas in which DTU has made a modest yet committed beginning," he said. The University has also forayed into management education this year by establishing 'Delhi School of Management' to offer MBA program in innovative areas like knowledge and technology management.

With a view to encourage excellence in education and research, DTU has established an 'Innovation Fund' with a seed money of Rs. 10 lakh and has introduced cash awards of Rs. 10,000 for the toppers of each semester, in each discipline and Reward of Rs 10,000 for faculty members who publish research papers in International Journals of High Impact Factor. The University has also recruited about 22 new faculty members at various levels recently.

Prof. Sharma, who was a part of the recent 'FICCI Higher Education Delegation to US' shared his experience of visiting world-class Universities like Harvard University, Yale University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to mention prominent ones, and the best practices followed by them, on the occasion. DTU had entered into two breakthrough international collaborations in past 100 days including a tie-up with one of the world's best aeronautics company Lockheed Martin, US for the commercial design and development of an Unmanned Arial Vehicle and another MoU with Groupe des Ecoles des Mines (GEM), France to establish a program of academic and scientific exchange and collaboration in areas of interest and benefit to both institutions. University is also establishing a UNESCO Centre for Water Technology and Management to focus on cost-effective technology development for water treatment, water recycling and reuse.

Speaking about his vision for the University, Prof. Sharma remarked, "The focus of DTU will be on Panchsheel of technical education - including Troika of Education, Research and Innovations imbibing scientific values and professional morality; International Quality Curriculum design and delivery; World-class Knowledge Infrastructure; Seamless integration of Science and Engineering; Research driven, industry relevant Innovations; and Network with selected World Class Universities." The thrust areas of R&D at DTU are going to be Biofuel and Clean Energy Technologies, Future Automobile Solutions, Nano Scale Devices and Photonics, New and Smart Materials, Conducting Polymers, Broadband on Power lines, Info Security and Network Management and Socially Relevant Technologies
