Initiatives
In an expression of concern towards the environment, students of Delhi Technological University (DTU), formerly Delhi College of Engineering, have decided to celebrate ‘Save Fuel Day’ campaign on June 19, 2010.
Initiated by The Urge – I be the change, an organization of environmentally concerned students group of DTU, ‘Save Fuel Day’ endeavours to encourage people to use public mode of transportation rather than private vehicle for commuting on June 19 (Saturday) and thus save non-renewable sources of energy, reduce pollution and save money, as well. Details about the campaign can be accessed on the weblink http://aglasem.com/theurge/fuel-day. The campaign is primarily being popularized through communication mediums like sms, emails and social networking sites like Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/event.php?eid=102081513172837&ref=search), where over 2000 people have already registered and pledged their support to the cause.
According to Anand Meena, a third year student of Computer Science at DTU and main brain behind the Save Fuel Day campaign, “The world is facing a severe fuel crisis. It has been estimated by the year 2025 all the oil reservoirs are going to be empty. By pledging not to use our personal vehicle for atleast one day and incorporating fuel basic, fuel saving habits in our daily lives like switching off cars on red lights, avoiding use of generators, and cooking in a pressure cooker to save gas etc. we can save a considerable amount of fuel.” Other members of his team include Abhishek Bindal, Abhishek kanojia, Anwesha Bose, Astha Nagpal and Harsimranjeet Singh, all third year students of different branches of DTU. Depending on the success of the Save Fuel Day campaign on June 19, students are keen to make it a regular feature, to be held on monthly basis.
Earth hour was observed at Delhi Technological University(formerly Delhi College of Engineering) in association of
The Urge. College students , faculty and the administration duly joined hands and switched off the lights for an hour.
Clothes Donation Camp
Budding engineers of tomorrow displayed their softer side when students of Delhi Technological University (DTU), formerly Delhi College of Engineering, organized a camp to collect old clothes and woolens, for distributing it to the underprivileged lot.
As a part of the students group ‘The Urge’, four undergraduatestudents of DTU organized a clothes donation camp from January 18-21, 2010 at the University campus. According to Abhishek Bindal, a third year student of Computer Engineering at DTU and a member of The Urge, “The philosophy behind The Urge is – ‘I Be the Change‘. Every day we have been reading in papers about people dying due to cold so, we decided to take the lead and make a contribution, howsoever modest, to the underprivileged lot.” Other members of his team included Anand Meena and Abhishek Kannojia from the same class and Harsimranjeet Singh, third year student of Polymer Science and Chemical Technology.
The four-day camp turned out to be a huge success and saw not just the students coming forward but also staff, officers and faculty members of the University to donate their old sweaters, jackets, coats, trousers, shirts and other clothing items. Some even donated suitcases full of clothes at the camp. All the collection was then handed over to a nearby centre of Navjyoti India Foundation, which in turn has taken the responsibility of distributing theclothes among the deserving lot. ”It is really heartening to see students of engineering, who are usually so busy with their classes and practical work taking out time and indulging in such philanthropic activities. We at DTU are committed to do our bit for the society in whichever way possible,” said Prof. P.B. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, DTU.
